Since gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, we believe that regular dental hygiene visits are one of the best ways to look after your long-term oral health and maintain your natural smile.
At your dental examination, our dentists will check for signs of gum disease, which can be reversible if it is caught early. Even if your gum disease is not wholly reversible, regular hygiene visits can still slow down or stop the progression of the condition.
Alongside effective oral care at home, visits to our dental hygienist can prevent and treat gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath.
For many of our patients, we recommend a hygiene visit once or twice a year. For patients with gum disease, it may be advisable to attend hygiene appointments every 3 months.
A hygiene clean helps to remove plaque and calculus from hard-to-reach areas that are difficult to brush. Our hygienist also offers tailored advice to help maintain good oral health at home. We recommend all our patients brush their teeth for 2 minutes twice a day and use floss or interdental brushes daily.
Please talk to your dentist if you would like to find out more about gum disease.
We also recommend the British Society of Periodontology website as a useful resource for patients.
